‘Tweet’ saves 288 boat passengers, crew

SOCIAL media has once more proven its worth when 288 passengers of a motorized vessel that run aground in Misamis Occidental on Monday morning were saved by a tweet.

Twitter user @danielteeee posted a messaged at the official Twitter page of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) after the banca “Ocean Jet 7” they were riding run aground at around 6:30 am. 

“@coastguardph We need immediate rescue!,” he tweeted, prompting the PCG to ask for the exact location of the incident. Personnel were immediately dispatched to rescue the passengers.

PCG Capt. Armand Balilo said Ocean Jet 7, carrying 271 passengers and 17 crew, was bound for Tagbilaran City in Bohol when it run aground after encountering strong winds and current. 

Balilo said the vessel “slightly cracked at starboard side when it run aground.”
