The Home Front: Going green in 2020

As we kick off a new decade, there’s a strong desire for change and optimism, which we’re seeing reflected in home decor trends, says Dayna Isom Johnson, Etsy’s resident trend expert.

“I think we’re in a time of environmental and social awareness and shoppers are really thinking about why to buy rather than just purchasing because they like something,” says Isom Johnson, also a judge on the NBC show Making It (hosted by Amy Poehler) which celebrates makers from across the U.S.

Isom Johnson says earth tones have proved very popular in home decor over the past few years, with burnt orange being a favourite in 2019.

The year 2020 is all about the colour green and more specifically, bright, vibrant shades, with neon green receiving a lot of attention, she says.

Etsy’s colour of the year for 2020 is chartreuse, she says.

“This vivid tone of green is really going to invoke a feeling of excitement and growth and I think that’s right in line with starting a new decade. Here in the U.S., we have a presidential election coming up this year so people are really craving that excitement and growth and potential change and I think chartreuse really embodies those feelings,” she says.

Colour blocking is another huge trend we’ll be seeing in home design this year, says Isom Johnson, and she believes this is an evolution of the terrazzo craze — chips of granite, marble or glass, set in concrete) that has experienced such a renaissance over the past few years.

In 2019, these small chips of colour were expanded into oversized graphic prints in home design, and this year they’ll be bigger still, she says.

“You’ll be seeing these really vivid beautiful colours, like chartreuse, paired with these toned-down colours like navy or sky blue or different variations of green, and really making these graphic statements,” she says.

Just as what’s hot in fashion often translates into home design, so too does what’s trending in the beauty industry, says Isom Johnson.

As such, we’ll be seeing the bespoke beauty trend  — a growing desire for highly personalized products — reflected in home design. People will be looking for more custom cleaning supply products, along with soaps and other items for the home, instead of going for a one recipe fits all approach, she says.

There are more makers producing in this area and catering to people with allergies, sensitivities, and different buying preferences, such as vegans, she says.

“On Etsy, there’s been a 15-per-cent increase in searches for custom soap in the last three months and I think this reflects a year of purpose for 2020. People are wanting to know what ingredients are in an item they’re purchasing, be it hand soap or laundry detergents. They’re wanting to purchase more from small batch makers and shop sustainably,” she says.

There has also been a real increased interest in buying locally, says Isom Johnson.

“Some people will set their filters for the city they live in, some others will set it for the country or state they live in, and I think that all boils down to how can I make a purchase that’s more meaningful. You’re supporting a local business and you can customize it to whatever your needs are,” she says.
