A man has been charged with murder in the death of 39-year-old Jason Stanley Wells in Surrey on Thursday.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team says 33-year-old Michael James Petronio has been charged with second-degree murder.

Surrey RCMP officers responded to an altercation at a Newton strip mall in the 7500-block of 120th Street just before 1 a.m., where they found Wells dead in the parking lot.

Police say a witness to the fight followed the suspect from a safe distance as he fled, and directed police to his location a few blocks away.

Officers arrested him, and located a weapon possibly used in the homicide.

IHIT says Petronio is scheduled to appear in Surrey Provincial Court at 2 p.m.  Friday.
