Veteran journalist and newspaper columnist Ninez Cacho-Olivares died on Friday morning after a “lingering illness,” according to The Daily Tribune, the newspaper that she founded. She was 78.
“Through all the challenges that the newspaper went through, she had one stubborn purpose, which was to put the Daily Tribune to bed every day,” the newspaper wrote on its Facebook page.
Prior to starting the Tribune, Cacho-Olivares wrote for Bulletin Today (now the Manila Bulletin), Philippine Daily Inquirer, Business Day and BusinessWorld. She was also editor in chief of the Philippine Post.
In 1999, Cacho-Olivares started The Daily Tribune, where she served as editor in chief, publisher and, until recently, a columnist.
In February 2019, she was a member of the panel and a moderator at The Manila Times TV during the anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution.
Her last column was fittingly published on Friday, regarding the Philippines and United States banning each other’s government officials over the controversial detention of Sen. Leila de Lima.
