SENATORS on Tuesday urged Filipinos to welcome the new year with a refreshed spirit of unity, hope and optimism as the world begins the third decade of the millennium.

Senate President Vicente Sotto 3rd and Sen. Panfilo Lacson

Senate President Vicente Sotto 3rd and Senators Panfilo Lacson, Juan Edgardo Angara, Francis Pangilinan, Maria Lourdes Nancy Binay and Ana Theresia Hontiveros shared their wishes for the people on New Year’s Eve.

“H’wag na sanang pumatol ang mga Pilipino sa fake news (I hope Filipinos will no longer believe in fake news)!” Sotto said in a text message.

Lacson, on Twitter, said, “My 2020 New Year’s resolution: be who I am in public service — no temptation for the dirty ‘pork-barrel’; no lobby money from lobbyists; pursue my advocacies no matter what the cost; let the inconvincible be and try to keep those who believe in my cause on my side.”

Angara, meanwhile, expressed hope that there would be jobs for all Filipinos, to put food on the table, roof over their heads and hope in the hearts of their loved ones. “For those who feed us, a better year, bumper harvest and bountiful catch.”

“To those who labor overseas, more reunions with loved ones, and finally, after dreams have been met, a one-way ticket to the homeland, for their families to be complete again,” he said.

“To civil servants, the continuing passion to serve our people, whether molding the minds of our youth, defending our borders, or keeping our streets safe,” Angara said.

He added, “I wish entrepreneurs profit with honor, a just return to the audacity of their investments,  including millennials in brave  start ups.”

“As 2019 winds down and we look toward 2020, let’s make a commitment to continue standing up for our rights and what is true, and for our future and our children,” Pangilinan said.

“We will be faced with fresh challenges anew — higher prices triggered by tax reform law, low farmers’ incomes, climate crisis. The task ahead is enormous, but the people’s fighting spirit is greater,” he added.

“Bilang biyuda at bilang (As a widow and as a) solo mom, one of my New Year’s resolutions is to spend more time with my kids, lalo na ngayong lumaki na sila (now that they are all grown up),” Hontiveros said on Twitter.

Binay said there was so much Filipinos have to be thankful for.

“We will always welcome the new year with a bright and colorful smile. Armed with our faith, prayers, and our collective strength, we will rise and move forward,” she said.
