A Surrey senior who killed his wife by stabbing her more than 120 times has died in prison of natural causes.
Sebastiano Damin had been at Abbotsford’s Pacific Institution since June 2011, serving a second-degree murder sentence for killing his wife Maria Catroppa.
On Nov. 23, 2009, Damin attacked Catroppa, 69, while she slept in their Fleetwood townhome. He suffered depression and was terrified their marriage was falling apart. The pair had been sleeping in separate rooms at the time of the attack.
Police later found that Catroppa had been stabbed 126 times during the early morning attack.
In 2011, Damin was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for at least 10 years. He later tried to appeal the conviction was but was overturned.
On Wednesday, a statement shared by the Correctional Service of Canada said Damin died of “apparent natural causes” at the age of 84 on Sunday.
The CSC will review the circumstances around Damin’s death, as is required by policy.
