Youth climate advocacy group Sustainabiliteens to receive human rights award

Sustainabiliteens, a group of youth advocates who propelled Vancouverites to march for climate action, will be honoured with a human rights award for their work this year.
The Renate Shearer Human Rights Award is presented by the Community Legal Assistance Society, the B.C. Human Rights Clinic and the United Nations Association Vancouver Branch.
Sustainabiliteens will be presented the award on Tuesday at a free public event taking place at the Vancouver Law Courts.
“We know that climate change is among the most significant human rights issues of our time,” said Aleem Bharmal, a human rights lawyer and CLAS executive director.
“People who already face disadvantage and discrimination are feeling the impacts of climate change first, and will suffer the most. We are inspired by the leadership of the Sustainabiliteens as they fight for climate solutions rooted in equity and justice.”
Sustainabiliteens is a group of local teens who have organized several major climate events this year, including a thousands-strong climate strike that began at Vancouver City Hall and marched across Cambie Street Bridge. The group was also key in hosting a rally in downtown Vancouver where Swedish teen climate activist Greta Thunberg spoke.
