Fortis B.C. is warning commuters about one last interruption to Metro Vancouver traffic as they bring a major new gas line into operation.

It’s the final step in a two year project that snarled Metro Vancouver roads, so it seems fitting to cause more traffic chaos in the region, if only for old time’s sake.

The utility plans to complete the project on Saturday, Dec. 7, and warned about lane closures on Lougheed Highway at Springer Avenue in Burnaby, and Como Lake Avenue at Poirier and Robinson streets in Coquitlam. Sidewalk closures are expected as well.

Residents should expect a little noise — a loud whooshing sound, Fortis B.C. explained, as gas enters the new line for the first time — near the intersection of Boundary Road and Graveley Street in Burnaby, and Mariner Way and Spuraway Drive in Coquitlam.

This noise generally can’t be heard, as most of the gas line is buried underground. But it may be audible near the above-ground facilities at these locations.

Once the new gas line is in operation, it will help supply more than 210,000 homes and businesses throughout the Lower Mainland with natural gas.

It should all happen tomorrow, unless it doesn’t. If required, Fortis B.C. said, this work may continue on Sunday, Dec. 8.
