Majority of Filipinos are worried about the rising number of Chinese workers in the Philippines, according to the latest survey conducted by the Social Weather Stations (SWS).

The nationwide poll from September 27 to 30 among 1,800 adults showed that 70 percent of Filipinos were concerned about the rising number of Chinese working in the country, while 30 percent were not worried.

About 31 percent said they were worried a great deal, 39 percent said they were somewhat worried, 19 percent said they were not too worried, and 11 percent said they were not at all worried.

The proportion of those who were worried about the increasing number of Chinese nationals working in the Philippines was highest in Metro Manila at 75 percent, followed by Visayas at 71 percent, rest of Luzon at 69 percent, and Mindanao at 67 percent.

About 12 percent of the survey respondents noticed there were “very many” Chinese workers in their locality while 19 percent said there were “somewhat many” in their area.

However, 25 percent said they observed only a few Chinese workers, while 44 percent said there were none at all where they were from.

“This gives a net agreement score of +41 (percent agree minus percent disagree, correctly rounded), classified by SWS as very strong,” the polling firm said.

Chinese foreign workers were most visible in Metro Manila with 43 percent, followed by Visayas at 37 percent, Balance Luzon at 28 percent, and Mindanao at 19 percent, according to the SWS.

SWS also found that 27 percent strongly agreed and 25 percent somewhat agreed that the increasing number of Chinese nationals working in the Philippines was a threat to the country’s overall security.

On the other hand, some 14 percent somewhat disagreed and 13 percent strongly disagreed. The remaining 21 percent were undecided.

The net agreement that the increasing number of Chinese nationals working in the Philippines was a threat to the country’s overall security is highest in Metro Manila at “very strong” +38, followed by the rest of Luzon at “moderately strong” +27, Mindanao at “moderately strong” +21, and Visayas at “moderately strong” +15.

The September survey had sampling error margins of ±2.3 percent for national percentages, and ±4 percent each for Balance Luzon and Mindanao, and ±6 percent each for Metro Manila and Visayas.
