The Vancouver Police Department on Thursday confirmed that an investigation is under way into allegations levelled against three cops assigned to the same unit that disgraced police detective Jim Fisher worked for.
“As part of a thorough investigation conducted by the VPD into the actions of Jim Fisher, concerns about the conduct of three members from the counter exploitation unit related specifically to the Fisher investigation were referred to an independent agency for investigation,” said an email from the VPD Thursday.
The police did not say what independent agency is investigating the matter or detail any of the specific allegations levelled against the unidentified officers.
But a lawyer representing a pimp who was convicted following an investigation by the unit said on Wednesday that the investigation apparently relates to corruption-related offences.
Marilyn Sanford, who is handling the appeal of Tamim Albashir, who was sentenced to 10 years in jail earlier this year, made the comment during an appearance in a case-management conference in the B.C. Court of Appeal.
Solicitor General Mike Farnworth on Thursday said he was aware of the investigation, calling it a “serious” matter, and added he believed it would be investigated thoroughly but declined further comment.
“It would be inappropriate for me to comment on that and what’s happening. Obviously, any investigation will be thorough and complete.”
Fisher earlier this year lost his appeal of a 20-month jail term for committing sex-related offences against two vulnerable crime victims.
