Winter in Vancouver means months of wet weather and grey skies. So unlike other parts of our fair country, where the next few months are all about shovelling snow off sidewalks and getting stuck behind salt trucks, here, it’s about keeping our toes dry above all else. (And yes, everything crossed we don’t get too much snow this year.) Whether you go for heavy-duty rubber boots or a slightly more streamlined pair, Rebecca Tay presents five winter boots to give your cold-weather wardrobe a leg up this year.
THE MOONWALK
This pair of puffy, “Out ‘N About” boots by uber-popular, Portland-based brand Sorel reminds us of 1980s moon boots — albeit a more streamlined, fashion-forward version, which seems fitting, given this year’s 50th anniversary of Neil Armstrong’s lunar landing. Team with leggings or sweatpants, or tuck your jeans in for a street style-worthy look.

PRINTED MATTER
Wide velvet laces, a butt-kicking silhouette and pretty, printed leather: what more could you want in a winter boot? London-based brand Mother of Pearl shows us how it’s done; we love this “K1 Enzo” pair with an asymmetric midi skirt and an oversized sweater.

SPLISH SPLASH
There’s nothing like wearing a pair of fully waterproof rainboots that make you feel gleeful about splashing through puddles. This “Kalessi” pair, which also comes in dark tan and black, even features a shearling lining to keep your toes nice and toasty inside.

WOOL FOR WINTER
You’ve probably heard of Allbirds, that New Zealand company known for blowing up the sustainable footwear industry with its merino wool shoes and recycled plastic bottle laces. If you haven’t, well, yes, their shoes are made from wool, which sounds crazy but actually makes sense: after all, it’s moisture-wicking, breathable and temperature-regulating. This “Runner-up Mizzles” style is also given a weather-repellent treatment to help keep your feet dry.

BLACK MAGIC
For the epitome of form meets function, look no further than this pair of “Chelsea Rainwalker” boots by Swedish brand Stutterheim. Made of 100-per-cent natural rubber, with a 100-per-cent cotton lining, they work equally well at a country farm, outside a fashion show, or on the city streets.
