Vancouver police say fireworks were heard before a Marpole apartment complex went up in flames early Tuesday.

The blaze, which is the VPD is calling suspicious, broke out around 3:30 a.m. in a three-storey, 24-unit wood-frame building near Marine Drive and Heather Street.

Seven people — several who were trapped on balconies —  had to be rescued by Vancouver firefighters and two people were sent to hospital, including a 33-year-old man with serious injuries.

VPD Sgt. Steve Addison says detectives believe the fire started outside the building and then quickly spread to the structure.

Addison says witnesses reported hearing fireworks and seeing a group of people walking away from the building towards Marine Drive at the time of the fire.
