CAMPBELL RIVER — An RCMP officer is recovering from injuries he suffered during a traffic stop early Sunday morning in Campbell River.

Police say the Mountie was alone when he responded to a report of an intoxicated man in his vehicle. During the impaired driving investigation, police allege that a 20-year-old man assaulted the officer, resulting in a struggle to restrain the man.

The RCMP says in a news release that two members of the public helped the officer restrain the man until backup arrived to help take him into custody.

Jay Douglas has been charged with assault of a police officer causing bodily harm and resisting arrest and he’s due in court Monday. Police say Douglas is from Alberta but did not provide his home town.
