It’s not uncommon for the trends in hair and fashion to return, and lately we seem to have an obsession with a 1970s esthetic. The shag haircut is back, and this week I wanted to showcase how this style, while intimidating, can be very versatile.

This layered style has been overshadowed by the blunt textured bob shape for several years now but it’s making a comeback.  Women are wanting to enhance their natural hair texture and not fuss too much with their daily hair routine and when cut well this shape can give women the freedom and flexibility of doing more with their hair.

Be it shorter layers or longer ones, this cut is ideal for women with naturally wavy and limp hair that are looking for maximum volume and fullness.  It’s equally as beautiful for those with thick and curly hair as it lightens and softens the weight of hair while enhancing the texture.

Our client Zoe has light to medium density hair that is naturally wavy. She was tired of her lip flat hair and was ready to introduce more texture and personality to her daily hair routine.

Side profile:

The beauty about this haircut is that the layers create a lot of lift in the crown area, making the side profile look balanced.  If you have a flat crown the rounded layers maximize the lift.

The face framing layers offer definition to the facial feature and bone structure. Shorter layers frame the eyes and can enhance the cheek bones. For 1117 col makeover [PNG Merlin Archive] PNG

Shorter layers frame the eyes and can enhance the cheek bones. This cut can be styled forward for a more dramatic look.

If you opt for longer face framing layers, they offer bounce, lift and shape to otherwise one-length hair.  Styled with curls or swept away from the face, this cut offers a Farrah Fawcett feel.

The shag cut can be as much or as little work and commitment as you want.  It can be customized to your desired shape and style preference, be it short, long, exaggerated or subtle — and the possibilities are endless.
