As we slip further into fall, dresses may not be first of mind.

While cozy knits and waterproof boots are likely at the top of most shopping lists, don’t downplay the versatility of a stylish maxi dress. Whether in an easy knit or with slinky sequins, a maxi dress is an all-in-one outfit that can work well with a variety of different coat-and-shoe combinations.

Here are three of our current favourites.

Simply chic

From the Vancouver-based loungewear company, Smash + Tess, this dress perfectly balances comfort with versatility. Called the Winter Lounger in the colour Modest Marine, this piece is perfect for lazy Sundays at home, as well as social Saturday nights on the town. The weighty fabric keeps this dress from looking too casual, while the maxi length makes it a perfect fit for wearing with sleek heels or boots.

Animal instinct

Step up the style factor of your day-to-night wardrobe with an animal-print maxi dress like this snake-print style from H&M. The dress is made from a soft, fluttery chiffon and boasts a relaxed, slightly oversized shape, so it doesn’t come across as too bold. Pair it with heeled leather boots to go from desk to after-work drinks — no outfit alterations required.

Show-stopping sparkle

This Mesh and Sequin Deep V Gown from the Montreal-based brand Le Chateau makes a statement. There’s no debating that. Especially in this dark green hue (the gown also comes in black and white), this sequin-covered gown is sure to set its wearer apart from the rest of the black-bedecked evening crowd this holiday party season. We suggest wearing it with simple accessories in order to let the gown do all the talking.
