SEVERE tropical storm “Quiel” is expected to intensify into a typhoon before leaving the country on Friday evening or early Saturday morning, the state-run weather bureau said.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) last spotted the tropical depression at 375 kilometers west-northwest of Coron, Palawan.
It gained strength, packing maximum sustained winds of 110 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 135 kph. It was observed to be almost stationary over the West Philippine Sea.
For the next 24 hours, Quiel and the prevailing tail end of a cold front will bring cloudy skies with scattered to widespread rainshowers and thunderstorms over the Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region and Cagayan Valley. Quiel would also bring cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms over Zambales, Bataan, Cavite, Batangas, Palawan and Mindoro provinces, and Western Visayas. Metro Manila and the rest of the country may experience localized thunderstorms.
Gale warning remained in Batanes, Babuyan Islands, the northern coast of Cagayan, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Zambales, Bataan, Cavite, the western coast of Batangas, Occidental Mindoro, and Palawan. Small boats are advised against venturing out into these seas.
Pagasa is also monitoring another typhoon with international name “Halong.” It was seen moving farther away from the country and was last spotted at 3,045 kilometers east of extreme northern Luzon outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR). It has slightly weakened, carrying maximum sustained winds of 165 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 215 kph. Weather specialist Benison Estareja said Halong, which was moving northward at 15kph, was no longer expected to enter PAR. DIVINA NOVA JOY DELA CRUZ
