The Independent Investigations Office (IIO), B.C.’s police watchdog, has asked Crown counsel to consider charges against three members of the Kamloops RCMP in connection with a 2018 traffic collision that put a man in hospital.
On Dec 18, the RCMP reported that an unmarked cruiser collided with a stolen pickup truck around 12:30 a.m. in the area of Grasslands Boulevard and Westsyde Road after previous attempts to stop the truck had been unsuccessful.
During the arrest, police said, the driver suffered unspecified injuries.
Following an investigation, the IIO, which investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, determined that reasonable grounds exist to believe that three officers committed offences during the arrest.
The file has been forwarded to the B.C. Prosecution Service for consideration of a potential charge of assault against one of the officers, along with multiple driving-related offences against all three Mounties.
In approving charges, the Crown must be satisfied there is a substantial likelihood of conviction and that the prosecution is in the public interest.
