In typical Halloween fashion, the B.C. Children’s Hospital and B.C. Women’s Hospital + Health Centre did their part to raise spirits — as well as goblins, ghouls, witches and the like — at their annual trick-or-treat event Thursday morning.
The special event, now in its second year, allows hospital patients and their families to participate in the holiday even while in care, wearing costumes and receiving treats from decked-out hospital staff at spooky stations in three hospital lobbies.
“Halloween is a time of year that kids don’t want to miss out,” said Mary McKillop, director of patient experience for both hospitals. “If they’re not in their home or they’re not at their schools, or they’re not in their neighbourhood, they might miss out on Halloween.”
“So staff, volunteers, donors and stakeholders have come together to bring Halloween to the kids here at Children’s and Women’s hospitals.”
McKillop said the event was a success, but with 800 to 1,000 children on site at any given time, that was probably to be expected.
