New Democrat candidate Bonita Zarillo has been granted a recount in Port Moody-Coquitlam after losing to Conservative Nelly Shin by 153 votes. Recounts only happen when the votes between the winner and the runner-up are separated by 0.1 per cent of the total.
On election night Oct. 21, Zarillo trailed Shin by more than 300 votes but after the official count was complete, she was just 153 votes behind.
Zarillo confirmed a judge in New Westminster ordered the recount Tuesday.
No date has been set for the recount. A spokesperson at Elections Canada said they were waiting from their lawyer before issuing an official statement about the recount in Port Moody-Coquitlam.
Meantime, the Bloc Quebecois is seeking judicial recounts in two Quebec federal ridings narrowly won by the Liberals.
The party said Tuesday it made a request in Quebec Superior Court for a recount in the Montreal riding of Hochelaga and said it would make a similar demand for a riding in Quebec City.
Liberal Soraya Martinez Ferrada won Hochelaga by 328 votes over Bloc candidate Simon Marchand.
Bloc candidate Christiane Gagnon lost by 325 votes to former Liberal cabinet minister Jean-Yves Duclos in the riding of Quebec.
More to come …
