B.C.’s police watchdog has been called in after a man died in police custody early Wednesday morning in Langley.
The RCMP say shortly after 3 a.m., police received an abandoned 911 call and Langley Mounties were sent to the location on 72nd Avenue.
When officers arrived, they located a man outside who was believed to be under the influence of drugs and called emergency services for assistance, according to an RCMP E Division news release Wednesday.
RCMP say a fight broke out during the arrest, and then they noticed that the man was losing consciousness. Mounties say they performed CPR on the man until emergency crews arrived.
Paramedics tried to revive the man but he died, according to the RCMP.
The Independent Investigation Office B.C. will now determine whether the police officers’ actions are linked to the man’s death.
