ANTIPOLO: University of Santo Tomas (UST) and Rhenz Abando have moved on from the controversy surrounding Abando’s alleged plan to leave the Growling Tigers, as they defeated National University (NU), 88-76, on Saturday in Season 82 University Athletic Association of the Philippines men’s basketball tournament at the Ynares Sports Center here.
The Growling Tigers were not affected by the recent transfer rumors of Abando, as they crushed the Bulldogs in the last three quarters behind the solid performance of Chabi Chabiyo, CJ Cansino, Renzo Subido and Mark Nonoy to improve their win-loss record to 7-5.
“We played well, we were able to execute our game plan and lots of players stepped up. They just played basketball and had fun. They enjoy the game but they know they are doing that with responsibility,” said UST coach Aldin Ayo.
Down 17-18 after the first quarter, UST countered with a 21-12 run in the second period to lead 38-30 at halftime.
The Growling Tigers also built their largest advantage at 58-35 after Chabiyo’s three-point play with 4:32 left in the third period.
Chabiyo scored 16 points and grabbed 14 rebounds while Cansino added 15 points and five rebounds to lead the Growling Tigers. Subido made nine of his 14 points in the last quarter, Nonoy contributed 12 and Abando had nine points also for UST.
“I just trust the system. I just followed coach Aldin’s advise and instruction. I just give my best to the team,” said Cansino, who also performed well for the second time after scoring 12 points in UST’s 84-78 win over University of the Philippines last Wednesday.
Dave Ildefonso finished with 27 points and Shaun Ildefonso had 15 points to lead the Bulldogs, who have been eliminated.
NU suffered its ninth loss in 11 games.
