A low pressure area on the eastern part of Luzon may intensify into a tropical cyclone, the state-run weather bureau said on Wednesday.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) last spotted the LPA at 1,335 kilometers east of Baler, Aurora.
Pagasa weather specialist Loriedin Dela Cruz said it was possible for the LPA to develop into a tropical cyclone in the next 24 to 48 hours. She said it was moving in a northwest direction towards extreme Northern Luzon.
The LPA, however, is expected to weaken once it reaches the northern part of the country because of a northeasterly surface windflow, which is not conducive for a storm, Dela Cruz said.
Light rains are expected over Batanes and the Babuyan Group of Islands because of the northeasterly surface windflow.
Scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms may pour over Mindanao and Eastern Visayas because of the intertropical convergence zone.
Metro Manila and the rest of the country is likely to experience isolated rainshowers because of localized thunderstorms, Pagasa said. DIVINA NOVA JOY DELA CRUZ
