A woman is in hospital with serious injuries after she was struck by a vehicle and dragged several blocks early Saturday morning in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.
Vancouver police say the incident happened around 12:30 a.m. on East Hastings Street near Jackson Street. Witnesses say the woman was struck by a van pulling a trailer and then became trapped under the vehicle.
The driver, who police say was unaware that he had hit someone, continued to drive four blocks to Columbia Street, about 600 metres, before coming to a stop.
“When the driver came to a stop, he then realized the woman had been struck and dragged,” VPD spokesman Sgt. Steve Addison said in an email statement.
Addison said the female pedestrian, who has not been identified, suffered serious and life-threatening injuries.
The driver, a man in his 30s, was taken into custody and then released pending a further investigation.
Police say alcohol is believed to have been a factor.
