A tense standoff between police and a wanted man holed up inside a cabin near the tiny Kootenay village of Argenta has ended in the individual’s arrest.
The “dynamic and unfolding situation,” as Mounties described the incident in a news release, began around 7 p.m. on Thursday evening when Kaslo RCMP officers went to a rural property in the area in order to serve arrest warrants on an individual known to police. The man, 28, fled to a nearby cabin and barricaded himself inside.
Police allege that the suspect fired shots during the standoff, seriously injuring one officer, who was swiftly transported to hospital.
While we always hope that situations such as this come to a swift and safe resolution, we are thankful that our officer is expected to fully recover and no one else has been injured,
said Chief Supt. Brad Haugli, officer-in-charge of the Southeast District RCMP.
The man remains in police custody and no charges have been laid.
Argenta is on the northern tip of Kootenay Lake, about 110 kilometres north of Nelson.
