News of the demise of one of Vancouver’s more popular watering holes appears to be premature.

Four months ago, it was reported that “Vancouver’s oldest bar” — The Cambie — was closing its doors.

At the time, the closure was set for Nov. 30 and was due to the 122-year-old pub building being sold for close to $15 million. The pub — dubbed in 2001 by Vice as one of Vancouver’s best places to “get wasted on the cheap.” — also has backpacker accommodations upstairs.

However, on Wednesday, out of the blue, a press release from the Cambie Malones Group was released stating the pub “has been saved and will no longer be closing its operations this year.”

The release stated the building had been sold as part of a divorce proceeding and that the Cambie Malones Group had struck a deal with the new owners to keep the pub going into the “foreseeable future.” The Cambie hostel will also remain open.

Meanwhile, West Restaurant and Bar at 2881 Granville Street announced on Wednesday that it would close after 20 years. West is one of several outlets operated by the Toptable Group.
