Fire-damaged Emily Carr University closed another week amid arson investigation

Classes at Emily Carr University in Vancouver are cancelled for another week after a suspected arson damaged some offices and art studios.
The university posted an update Tuesday saying progress has been made in the cleanup, standing water has been removed, air quality is healthy and fire safety and security systems are fully functioning.
But many classrooms and shops aren’t yet safe to use and some areas will be unavailable until work is finished.
Police are investigating and have said the fire may have been deliberately set by a person who broke into the university early Saturday. The university said it is reviewing security protocols.
Classes missed this week will be rescheduled during the assessment period at the end of the semester in December.
“The areas most impacted are the Research and Industry Office, and Painting and Drawing studios on Level 4,” the university said shortly after the fire.
While there is water damage in other areas of the building, few personal effects or artworks were affected.
The school for art and design opened on its new East 1st Avenue campus in 2017 after decades on Granville Island.
