Alert signal lifted in Batanes as ‘Onyok’ departs PH

ALERT Signal 1 was lifted in Batanes and Babuyan Group of Islands as typhoon “Onyok” (international name: “Mitag”) left the Philippine area of responsibility on Monday evening, the weather bureau said. As of 4 a.m. on Tuesday, The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) last spotted “Onyok” at 675 kilometers north extreme Northern Luzon. It has further intensified, carrying maximum sustained winds of up to 140 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 170 kph. It was moving in a northward direction, with an increased speed of 30 kph. The trough of Onyok continued to bring cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms in Batanes. Metro Manila and the rest of the country were expected to experience localized thunderstorms. Meanwhile, gale warning remained up in Batanes, Calayan, Babuyan, Cagayan, Isabela and the northern coast of Ilocos Norte. Pagasa advised small fishing vessels against venturing out into these seas.
