Police have released the name of the man charged in connection with Tuesday’s savage assault on a nurse at Abbotsford Regional Hospital.

The B.C. Nurses’ Union says a female nurse was ambushed by a patient who struck her with an exercise weight and then smashed her head against a wall while she was working an early-morning shift at the hospital.

The Abbotsford Police said the incident happened inside the hospital’s Baker wing, which houses the inpatient psychiatry unit.

The union says the nurse suffered a broken jaw, fractured cheekbone and damaged teeth, as well as face and head injuries during the attack.

Neale Rex Heath, 62, was arrested Tuesday and charged with aggravated assault, assault causing bodily harm and  two counts of assault with a weapon.

Heath, who does not have a criminal record, was scheduled to appear in Abbotsford Provincial Court on Thursday morning.

He remains in custody at the hospital.

Both WorkSafeBC and police are investigating.
