Pipeline protest to take place in downtown Vancouver on Tuesday

A protest against the Trans Mountain Pipeline will take place in downtown Vancouver on Tuesday afternoon.
The protest is the latest in a series of Vancouver-based events organized as part of a global climate strike movement.
Several local climate action groups – including Climate Convergence, Mountain Protectors, BROKE, 350 Vancouver and Extinction Rebellion – are encouraging people to gather at the intersection of Burrard and Pender streets at 4 p.m., with the protest scheduled to last until 6 p.m.
“This action supports the students who are leading the fight for climate justice. Everyday people and youth cannot allow governments to sacrifice a sustainable future for the sake of corporate profits,” read a statement shared by organizers.
The protest is meant to highlight government’s lack of action in response to the worldwide climate crisis, particularly in light of the Canadian government’s $4.5 billion purchase of the Trans Mountain Pipeline and expansion project.
“The situation is urgent, as Trans Mountain prepares to use a massive tunnel-boring machine to force a 2.6-km tunnel through Burnaby Mountain,” say organizers.
On Friday, a global climate strike will take place around the world, with Vancouver’s strike set to take place at City Hall at 1 p.m. Between 15,000 to 20,000 are expected to attend, say organizers.
