Swoop aircraft hits geese, returns to Abbotsford

A Swoop Airlines plane returned to Abbotsford Airport this morning after it hit a flock of geese.

Flight 312, a Boeing 737 aircraft, was bound for Edmonton when it turned back shortly after takeoff.

There was a birdstrike at YXX – the Aircraft has landed safely passengers have been offloaded into the terminal safely. Updates will be available in the coming hours.

A passenger on the aircraft said she heard loud “thuds,” noticed smoke in the cabin and smelled something burning.

Donna-Lee Rayner, in a Facebook post, said the crew informed the passengers over the intercom that one of the plane’s engines “sucked up some geese and the smell was them, well getting cooked.”

The plane landed safely in Abbotsford.

“All travellers were offloaded safely and without incident,” the airline said.

The airline has removed the plane from service for further inspection.

The flight was rescheduled to depart Abbotsford at 8 p.m. Monday.

Swoop said it was offering full refunds to impacted passengers unable to fly on the rescheduled flight.
