It was a dangerous weekend on Metro Vancouver roads, with three separate incidents leaving one dead, several injured and a car submerged in the Fraser River.
On Saturday around 6:30 p.m., Vancouver Police were called about a car that had gone off the south end of Fraser Street and into the water.
Officers arrived to find a vehicle that had crashed through a barrier and brush and plunged several feet into the Fraser River. Both occupants were able to exit the vehicle and swim to shore; both were transported to hospital with minor injuries.
The Coast Guard is now working to retrieve the vehicle from the water on Sunday morning. Police continue to investigate.
Around 10 p.m. Saturday in Burnaby, two people – including an RCMP officer – were sent to hospital with injuries after an RCMP cruiser, a truck and a sedan collided in the intersection of Kingsway and Griffiths.
It remains unclear what caused the collision though reports say the police vehicle was responded with lights and sirens at the time.
Over in Surrey, one man is dead after a Mustang and a Camero collided early Sunday morning.
According to Surrey RCMP, a grey Camero was westbound on Nordel Way around 1:15 a.m. Sunday when a Mustang pulled past the Camero just east of 120th Street.
The two vehicles then collided and the driver of the Mustang lost control of the vehicle and spun sideways into a hydro pole.
The driver of the Mustang suffered non-life threatening injuries, while a male passenger died at the scene. The two male occupants in the Camero sustained only minor injuries.
The cause remains unknown at this time though investigators noted it was raining heavily at the time of the collision. The road was reopened around 11 a.m. on Sunday.
Anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who may have dashboard camera footage of the collision is asked to contact Surrey RCMP at 605-599-0502.
