A man has been charged in a 2017 single-car collision in Maple Ridge that killed a passenger.

It happened on Aug. 26, 2017, in the 2500-block of Lougheed Highway.

Witnesses told police the vehicle had been speeding eastbound on Lougheed Highway before the driver appeared to lose control and the vehicle went off the road and crashed into a number of trees.

A male passenger was declared dead at the scene of the crash.

Last month, just two weeks before the second anniversary of the crash, charges were approved against a Port Coquitlam man.

Duane Arthur Kilberg is charged with impaired driving causing death, causing an accident resulting in death, and dangerous driving causing death.

Ridge Meadows police credit the many witnesses who stopped to give their statements with police for providing the evidence needed to make charge recommendations.

“The general public might think that if witnesses are at the scene, you are not required. However, you may have key evidence integral to the file that helps us put together the before, during and after of an incident,” said Cpl. Chad Raymond.

“Police want to thank the numerous witness that came forward to assist with the collision.”

Kilberg made his first appearance in court on Thursday.
