After spending the better part of the last 18 months renovating a once-dilapidated resort on South Andros Island in the Bahamas, Canada’s favourite construction celebrity Bryan Baeumler will visit Vancouver to headline the annual Vancouver Fall Home Show this October.

While viewers of his many hit TV series have seen Baeumler solve just about every home improvement challenge from problem plumbing and uneven floors to creating the open concept layouts so loved by homeowners, everyone will be keen on an update about his latest venture and TV show, Island of Bryan.

Located on one of the many islands that make up the Bahamas, Bryan and Sarah Baeumler visited the 50-year-old resort in 2017 and decided to tackle the renovation and reimagine the aging structures to create a luxury vacation destination. That journey – much longer than the six months they originally thought it would take – is documented in Island of Bryan (with a second season now in the works and scheduled to air in January).

“While you’re working through a renovation, no matter how big or small, priorities and ideas will change, logistics will fail, material won’t arrive on time or won’t be available at all – so you need to be prepared to change directions and go with the flow,” says renovation expert Bryan Baeumler.

Looking back at the hard work it has taken to transform the resort into Caerula Mar Club Baeumler says the many lessons he and his team have learned over the years were put to good use during the renovation.

“Planning your project well in advance and paying attention to the seemingly small details of logistics and timing are critical. That being said, another big lesson is that you need to be prepared for plans to change. While you’re working through a renovation, no matter how big or small, priorities and ideas will change, logistics will fail, material won’t arrive on time or won’t be available at all – so you need to be prepared to change directions and go with the flow,” he says.

Above all, he adds, don’t beat yourself up or sweat the small stuff; keep your eye on the big picture and move forward where you can and when you can.

While show-goers’ own renovations are unlikely to be held up by having to wait for the weekly boat to arrive with building supplies as was the case with the Caerula Mar renovation, it’s no secret that making adjustments to deal with the unexpected is all part of the reno process.

Baeumler, who has partnered with Marketplace Events as the official spokesperson for its 13 home shows across Canada – including the Vancouver Fall Home Show in October and the BC Home + Garden Show in the spring – will be appearing on the main stage at the event and also answering questions from readers. If you have a reno dilemma this is your opportunity to ask Bryan for his advice. Send your questions to mbroberts@postmedia.com by September 9 and Baeumler will answer the best ones in the Fall issue of Westcoast Homes and Design magazine (published in the Vancouver Sun on October 12 and the Province on October 13.)

Bryan will be appearing live on stage at the show on Friday, October 25 at 6 p.m. and Saturday, October 26 at 1 p.m.
