As one of Vancouver’s best-known thespians, Ryan Reynolds gets a lot of press. Here at the Vancouver Sun, for instance, we cover the comings and goings of the Deadpool actor quite a bit.
Ryan Reynolds, on the other hand, rarely writes about us. Perhaps the movie star is too busy starring in movies.
But on Wednesday, Reynolds took a moment to discuss his personal connection to his childhood newspaper in a confessional Instagram post, sharing a photo of a painting commissioned by wife Blake Lively that commemorates his Vancouver heritage.
“My first job was delivering newspapers for the Vancouver Sun,” Reynolds wrote, explaining why the young boy in the painting was hauling a satchel of old Sun broadsheets.
Reynolds went on to explain that the painting, created by L.A. artist Danny Galieote, is loaded with other personalized Easter eggs, including a Sun front page featuring the actor’s idol, Canadian comedy legend John Candy.
“The house in the painting is my childhood home,” Reynolds said. “My brothers and I spent years trying to kill each other on that lawn. (…) The house no longer stands but it’s a living, breathing thing in my head.”
Few actors represent Vancouver quite as proudly as Reynolds, which probably explains why YVR is so eager to conscript him as a celebrity ambassador.
His staggering popularity probably plays a role too. In just a few hours, Reynolds’s post has already racked up more than 500,000 likes.
But maybe people just really like the painting. Reynolds sure does.
“This piece of art is the greatest present my wife has ever given me,” he said. “If there’s ever a fire, I’m grabbing this first. I’ll come back for Blake.”
