Delta police have stepped up patrols of Watershed Park after receiving reports of “suspicious meat” being left along a trail.

Over the past six weeks, Delta police has been contacted four times after chunks of meat — as much seven to 10 pounds  — was located near the trail entrance around 63rd Avenue.

The meat was discovered on July 17, July 28, Aug. 1 and Aug. 7.

Police say they don’t know why the meat was left in the park or whether it has been contaminated with any dangerous substances but they are encouraging dog owners to keep their dogs on a leash and be aware of anything their animals may be sniffing or eating on or near the trails in the park.

Delta police spokeswoman Cris Leykauf said meat samples are being sent to a lab for testing.

“We understand that many dog owners in the community are concerned about this,” she said. “Many of our officers are dog owners, too, and so despite this testing being complicated to arrange, they wanted to make sure they’re doing everything they can to ensure the safety of dogs here in Delta.”

Leykauf said Abbotsford police have not received any reports of dogs either eating the meat or becoming sick.
