B.C.’s police watchdog is investigating after an officer-involved shooting in Maple Ridge on Sunday.

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. has not provided details, only saying it has been notified of an officer-involved shooting in the jurisdiction of Ridge-Meadows RCMP.

.@iiobc has been notified of an officer-involved shooting in Ridge Meadows. Further details will be released when available.

Witnesses say the incident occurred around 3 p.m. at a home in the 12400-block Colemore Street in Maple Ridge.

Bruce Main said paramedics and police had responded to a home across the street occupied by an older couple with a son who has a mental illness.

“He went off his meds and they called the ambulance,” he said. “The paramedics came. One of the medics apparently she got cut up, and police were there, and one of the policemen’s vest was cut, too.”

Main said he heard three shots ring out in the otherwise quiet neighbourhood.

He said police had been called to the home before to respond to incidents involving the man, including one where he threatened a neighbour with a machete.

“As far as I can see, this shouldn’t have happened. He should be in a home, not in a subdivision,” said Main.

On Sunday afternoon, several police cruisers and three ambulances can be seen outside the street.

Authorities have not yet confirmed whether someone died or was injured from the shooting.

The IIO said it will release more details as they become available.
