SEN. Bong Go, chairman of the Committee on Sports, on Wednesday was briefed by sports leaders and other major players of the country’s hosting of the 30th Southeast Asian Games about the run-up to the Nov. 30-Dec. 11 sportsfest.
After being told that everything is right on track, including the completion of venues and the athletes’ ongoing buildup, Go could not help but urge sports leaders to rally behind the country’s staging.
Despite the election of a new president in Tagaytay congressman Bambol Tolentino, also the head of cycling, Go called on Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) officials to unite for the sake of the country.
Tolentino was the only one from the POC who graced the event while Philippine Sports Commission chairman Butch Ramirez came with all four commissioners.
“Sana mga magkasundo na sila (I hope that they finally all agree),” said Go during Wednesday’s meeting with the PSC, POC, Bases Conversion Development Authority, represented by head Vince Dizon and Phisgoc Chief Operating Officer Tats Suzara.
“Nag-elect na sila bagong president and election of new board of directors so nakikiusap ako na magkasundo na (They’ve elected a new president and board of directors so I am pleading that they all come
together).”
Even President Rodrigo Duterte has expressed his desire to see an end to the squabble, according to Go, who used to serve as Duterte’s personal assistant before “Si Pangulo ay nakikiusap din para sa mithiing manalo at maging successful ang hosting.”
Go added that for it to become successful, the funds have to be used properly in line with Malacanang’s directive.
“Ang pondo ay dapat magamit sa tama at maayos.”
Most importantly, Go said the government doesn’t want any form of corruption in the spending. (NICK GIONGCO)
