Suspected NPA guerrillas burn cargo truck
MANILA, Philippines — A cargo truck used in the ongoing construction for the Bicol International Airport in Legazpi, Albay province, was set on fire by suspected New People’s Army (NPA) members, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said on Friday.
The DOTr said around five suspected NPA members armed with high-powered firearms conducted a checkpoint around the area and ambushed a dump truck owned by Cuerpo Corp.
The driver was able to escape.
The suspects set the truck on fire, and then allegedly engaged the pursuing military men in a firefight. —Krixia Subingsubing
‘Fake’ candy factory raided in Misamis Oriental
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Misamis Oriental, Philippines — Authorities have raided a factory in Misamis Oriental that has manufactured counterfeit candy products for two years now.
Armed with a search warrant, a joint team of local officials, municipal police, Bureau of Internal Revenue personnel and National Bureau of Investigation agents, raided on July 25, two warehouses in the compound of Timberwoods Development Corp. owned by Taiwanese trader Huang Teng Pee.
Huang told authorities he leased the warehouses to another Taiwanese businessman, who in turn, ran the candy-making operation.
The police have yet to identity the Taiwanese tenant of Huang.
Seized were equipment, materials and ingredients used in making counterfeit candies, plastic bags full of candies, boxes of cigarettes, boxes of chewing tobacco and some cases of soda drinks. —Jigger J. Jerusalem
DFA to assist overstaying Pinoys in Israel
MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Saturday said the Philippine Embassy in Israel was looking into the needs of overseas Filipino workers and their children who are set to be deported for overstaying and other violations of immigration laws.
The DFA said the embassy in Tel Aviv continued to coordinate with Israel “to facilitate the humane and decent treatment in the repatriation of overstaying Filipinos.” —Jerome Aning
