TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan: Aiming to produce Philippine-made e-trike vehicles, a state university here has proposed the establishment of a P148-million electric-powered tricycle (e-trike) hub at the Cagayan Valley Regional Government Center (RGC) in this city.

This Cagayan State University (CSU)-proposed e-trike research and development hub is in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology (DoST) in Region 2.

Virginia Bilgera, DoST assistant regional director, presented the proposal during the joint Regional Development Council and Regional Peace and Order Council meeting in Cauayan City in Isabela province.

“Our proposed budget of P148.67 million will be funded through the science and technology department’s Niche Center in the Region (Nicer) program,” Bilgera said.

Bilgera said the CSU and DoST project includes the establishment of local manufacturing of e-trikes which will serve as one of the major short distance transport vehicles in the Cagayan Valley region.

The DoST said the e-trikes which would also serve as the major transport system of all employees and clientele of the RGC in Barangay Carig, which serves as the seat of regional governance but which lack regular service transport vehicles.

She said it is expected that by 2022, the hub will start manufacturing the designed e-trike suited for the booming Tuguegarao, the city which was tagged as the Tricycle Capital of the Philippines.

“In support of the mass transport research and development agenda of the government, CSU has been conducting studies on e-trike deployment and utilization as well as e-trike installation and stability,” Bilgera said.

She said their objective is to produce Philippine-made e-trike vehicles through the establishment of the e-trike research and development hub in Region 2.

“Through the establishment of the said hub, we are aiming to automate the local production of e-trike and to develop, test and evaluate its fabrication process,” Bilgera said.

She said the challenges in this project is how to increase the efficiency of the e-trike charging system by integrating alternative energy and by utilizing information technology system for tracking and data recording.
