MANILA, Philippines — Manila Mayor Isko Moreno on Tuesday said he would be pushing for the use of renewable energy in the city’s public schools.

Moreno bared his environmental plan for the city’s schools during a meeting with members of the Manila City School Board at the Manila City Hall.

Moreno said he had asked the board to come up with a proposal in the installation of solar panels and rainwater collectors on the rooftops of school buildings.

The mayor pushed for the plan as he cited the critical water level in some dams in the country.

“Nowadays, we’re having challenges with our water in our dams. While it is true na mayroon naman tayong pag-ulan, we are still in below comfortable water level in our dams,” Moreno said in a press briefing.

“Having said that, I am now encouraging the board to come up with environmental projects, programs to harness renewable energies,” he added.

According to Moreno, this move will also effectively show children how best to value the environment.

“If they are seeing these types of facilities, and it can be done since it’s not even rocket science, they will know how to care for the environment,” Domagoso told reporters after the board meeting.

“When they would be given the opportunity in the future, they will do the same kapag malalaki na sila,” he added. (Editor: Mike U. Frialde)
