NGCP builds P17.9-B Western Luzon project

THE National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) is undertaking the P17.9-billion Western Luzon backbone project that will help improve the reliability of power supply in the Luzon grid.
In a statement on Monday, the grid operator said it was working on a new transmission corridor through its Western Luzon 500-kiloVolt (kV) backbone project.
The project, which secured the Energy Regulatory Commission’s (ERC) approval, shall accommodate the bulk generation in the Zambales area, including the 600-megawatt (MW) coal power plant of Redondo Peninsula Energy Inc. (RP Energy).
The first phase of the project will involve the construction of the Castillejos-Hermosa 500 kV transmission line and will be connected to the new Hermosa substation.
Meanwhile, the second phase will include the building of a new Castillejos substation Bolo substation, and the Castillejos-Bolo 500 kV transmission line.
The Western Luzon project is expected to be completed by the second quarter of 2020.
NGCP is also gearing up for other projects in Bataan, including the Mariveles-Hermosa 500 kV Transmission Line Project, the Hermosa-San Jose 500 kV Transmission Line Project, and the Hermosa-Floridablanca 69 kV Transmission Line Project.
The Mariveles-Hermosa 500 kV Transmission Line Project involves the development of a new Mariveles substation, along with the transmission line.
It will serve as a new transmission corridor to accommodate about 2,836 MW of capacity from power plants, including the coal-fired power plants of GNPower Dinginin Ltd. Co., SMC Consolidated Power Corp., and Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction Co. Ltd. and Korea Electric Power Co.
The Hermosa-San Jose 500 kV transmission line, meanwhile, will cater to existing power plants in Bataan, including the Limay Coal Fired Power Plant and Subic Enron Diesel Power Plant, as well as new coal facilities of RP Energy and San Miguel Corp.
Both transmission projects, with a total project cost of P16.2 billion, will be completed in the last quarter of next year.
Earlier in February, the NGCP energized the P315.77-million Hermosa-Floridablanca 69 kV transmission line to support the old Hermosa-Guagua 69 kV line and address the low voltage concerns in the area.
“All of these projects in the western part of Luzon are critical in the stability and reliability of the transmission system in the near future,” NGCP said.
“Of course, the support and help of our stakeholders are still crucial in the smooth implementation and on-time completion of these projects,” it added.
The Western Luzon backbone, Mariveles-Hermosa 500 kV transmission line, Hermosa-San Jose 500 kV transmission line and Hermosa-Floridablanca 69 kV transmission line projects have been classified as energy projects of national significance by the Energy Investment Coordinating Council led by the Department of Energy.
