Greater collaboration between the academe and the IT sector can be one way of addressing the skills gap in the information and communications technology (ICT) sector. This is one of the key points raised by ICT pioneers during a dialogue on the current ICT landscape organized by ICTjob.ph, the Philippines’ premier IT job portal, on May 23.

Universities and colleges can be more geared toward teaching students technical and “essential” skills, according to these industry pioneers, who also led the early IT-BPO industry in the Philippines. Meanwhile, job portals such as ICTjob.ph can help raise awareness among the educational institutions about what the industry is looking for in terms of skill sets.

Tshidimba acknowledged the potential of the Philippine ICT sector. “The Philippines has one of the largest workforces in the world with very good English command,” said Tshidimba, who believes that the Filipinos’ mastery of the language is a huge advantage against other countries that can provide more technically competent IT professionals.

Talent development is a top priority in the Information Technology-Business Processing Management (IT-BPM) Roadmap 2022, a six-year initiative dedicated to accelerating the transformation of the ICT landscape in the Philippines.
