After encountering issues with regards to players playing in various leagues, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) will be more lenient in dealing with it this 95th Season of men’s basketball tournament set to begin July 7 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Peter Cayco of first time NCAA host school Arellano University announced Tuesday that the oldest college-based league has revised its rules with regards to applying sanctions on teams for players found to have played in other leagues – also known as ‘ligang labas’.
“Nag-amend kami ng rule (We’ve amended the rule). It was crafted for the protection of schools,” said Cayco, accompanied by basketball commissioner Tonichi Pujante during the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum at the Amelie Hotel in Manila.
“Now kasalanan mo (player), ikaw lang ang masa-suffer, not the whole team (Players involved if it’s their fault, they’ll suffer from it, not the whole team,” added Cayco, the incoming NCAA Management Committee (MANCOM) chairman for season 2019-2020.
It’s common practice for players to join other teams in ‘ligang labas’ – especially during summer time or off-season of the NCAA.
But once the league starts to accept the lineups for the coming season through the eligibility meeting, players should no longer be allowed to play in other tournaments.
