THE Philippine National Police (PNP) raided the offices of the Kapa Community Ministry International in Cebu to collect evidence for a case buildup against its owners, following the directive of President Rodrigo Duterte.
Police Col. Bernard Banac, PNP spokesman, said police operatives obtained documents proving the involvement of the Surigao del Sur-based religious group in investment scams.
No one was in any of the offices in two towns of Cebu during the raid.
The Kapa office in Compostela was set on fire but authorities managed to retrieve documents, including application forms, payout documents, ledgers, journals and books with records of transactions.
“[The] inventory is ongoing. We are continuously monitoring the activities of the investment company,” Banac told reporters in a news conference at Camp Crame, Quezon City.
He said police were armed with search warrants and defended the conduct of the raid that was based on orders of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) after the court dismissed the group’s petition for a temporary restraining order (TRO).
Kapa victims were encouraged by Banac to cooperate with the PNP and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) so that there would be enough basis for a case build up against the religious group that Duterte had ordered shut down.
Banac was also confirming reports that there were policemen who joined or have been victimized by Kapa.
“We have been releasing an advisory to all PNP personnel to never engage in this kind of investment schemes. There are so many legal ways for them to invest such as traditional plans and investing financially in legitimate and registered agencies,” he said.
“The risk in joining this investment scheme is so high. Not only they become victims, but they also become one of [Kapa] in perpetrating this kind of illegal activity,” he said. DEMPSEY REYES
