CAN people count on you not only in good times but also even in bad times? Are you a dependable person?
Being dependable is one of the most important assets that you can have in your career and in your business. I will not depend on someone who is always late, who can’t be trusted and is inconsistent, and who makes commitment but never fulfills them.
With a person who is dependable, others have complete confidence in him whatever the task may be. As a matter of fact, a dependable person doesn’t categorize between a small task and a big task. This means that even if the task is small, he gives the same effort as if it were a major or big task. He always gives 100 percent!
DEPENDABILITY means:
CONSISTENCY
Like what I’ve already mentioned, a truly dependable person is trustworthy and reliable AT ALL TIMES – whatever the task may be.
If your boss or employer gives you a seemingly insignificant task like make photocopies of some documents or a major task like manage a sales account or a top client, a dependable person will consistency exhibit a proper and positive attitude, a grateful spirit, and his 100 percent! And the boss doesn’t have second thought whenever he gives this person a job or task to do because he knows that this employee will deliver!
EXCELLENCE
Excellence doesn’t mean perfection. Excellence means that you will do your best! Many times employers or even friends don’t really expect you to come up with the most perfect end result.
But what they do expect from you is that you give your best! And people know when you’ve done your best. It will show in your attitude, in the kind of work you do, and in the effort that you give. It will show in the end result.
TRUSTWORTHINESS
I have a person whom I call in whenever I need some minor construction and maintenance to be done at home. He isn’t the best when it comes to skill. There are others out there so much better than him. But I keep on hiring him for jobs that I know he can do, not only because I know he does his best every time, but also because he is trustworthy in his work and in his time.
He is honest and reports to me when he isn’t able to finish his work, or when there is something he didn’t do because he wasn’t sure if that is what I wanted. He tells me if he doesn’t know how to do a certain task. But when he does his work, it is his best and it is enough for me. He is so trustworthy that I do not need to check on him every time.
How can I become a DEPENDABLE person?
- Do what you say, say what you do
Be consistent. When you say you will do it, then do it. When you say, “I will finish it at 5 p.m.” then finish it at 5 p.m. When you say you will attend an event (whether it is a meeting, a birthday, a wedding, or a simple visit), then be there.
If you find it difficult to be consistent, then start with small things like sticking to promises you make to your kids and start by going home early so you can spend more time with your family. If you are a student, then begin also by going home early and study, instead of spending idle times hanging out all the time.
- Always do your best
Most often, your boss or supervisor, your teacher, or parents don’t ask you to deliver perfection. But they want you to do your best. So strive to do your best!
Remember that your best is not always the same as other people, so don’t compare! Just focus on yourself, your work, and give the best efforts that you can give. When you do give your best, it will show because it is more than just performance but includes your heart and soul.
- Make sure people can trust you
Strive to be a person of integrity, someone others can totally trust in both small things and big things, especially in small things. Don’t weigh in the amount of effort you put by the size of the task.
Whether small or big, put in the same amount of your best effort. When you are given a task, bear in mind that they are not only giving you a job to do, they are giving their trust as well. Do everything possible to fulfill what you committed.
THINK. REFLECT. APPLY.
Are you a dependable person? Are you dependable at all times? Can you be trusted to do your work or task well with consistency, excellence, and trustworthiness?
