THE Office of the President gave the green light to auction off one-third of the Marcos jewelry collection estimated at P704.8 million, Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea said on Tuesday.
Palace spokesman Salvador Panelo said last week that President Rodrigo Duterte approved the request of the Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG) and it was only a matter of time as to when he would issue the directive.
Medialdea told reporters that Duterte had informed the PCGG of his order.
“[Office of the President] has officially informed PGCC that it interposes no objections to the proposed activities relative to the disposal of the Marcos Jewely Collections, subject to compliance w/ existing laws, rules and regulations,” Medialdea said.
In a press briefing also on Tuesday, Panelo said that the PCGG should start the auction.
“The PCGG should now undertake the process of auctioning the Marcos jewelries,” Panelo said.
The Marcos jewelry collection, three in all, is part of the billions worth of assets confiscated from the family of the late strongman Ferdinand Marcos and their cronies during his 21-year dictatorship. RALPH VILLANUEVA
