Experts of the Cambodian Mine Action Center (CMAC) have cleared four MK 82 bombs found in Kampong Speu and Prey Veng provinces last Tuesday.
Maj. Khut Soribayot, Phnom Sruoch district deputy police chief in charge of public order, said the bomb, which weighed 241 kilograms, was among the heaviest and most powerful during World War 2.
“The unexploded bomb was found when he was digging the pond at around more than 7 meters deep.
The bomb was sitting in good shape,” Soriyabot said. “It is lucky that he did not hit it when he was digging, which would’ve caused it to explode.”
He added that police forces reported the findings to CMAC officials, who removed the bomb from the site on Tuesday and subsequently destroyed it.
Meanwhile, Lt. Col. Ek Seanhorn, Prey Veng province’s Preah Sdach district deputy police chief, said that in Kampong Soeng commune’s Prey Khla village, locals last week who were using a machinery to clear a rice field also found a bomb, which measured one-and-a-half meters.
He added that CMAC officials have neutralized it.
“The bomb was buried at around 4 meters deep and weighed between 100 to 200 kilograms,” Seanhorn said. “In the past, we have continuously found unexploded ordnances in the area.”
