BACOLOD CITY – A man died after he was hit by a vehicle driven by a priest while crossing the national highway in Barangay Mabini, Valladolid, Negros Occidental last Monday.
Police identified the victim as Fidel Mahusay, 59, of Barangay Valladolid.
Police Capt. Joseth Catonina, town police chief, said the car was driven by Rev. Fr. Joebel Mangubat, 48, of Pontevedra, Negros Occidental.
The priest, chaplain of a parish in Paticui, Hinigaran, Negros Occidental, was supposed to attend a funeral wake in Bacolod City when the accident happened.
The victim suddenly crossed the street, while the priest, who was not speeding, was approaching the area at 8 p.m., Catonina said.
He said the victim sustained head injuries and was declared dead on arrival in a hospital.
Catonina said Mangubat fled fearing for his safety, but he surrendered to the Bacolod City Police Office. He was then turned over to Valladolid Municipal Police Station.
Mangubat was released from detention, early the following day, after having an initial settlement with the victim’s family, the town police chief said.
Catonina said Mangubat, who felt sorry for what happened, told the victim’s family that he will shoulder the burial expenses. (Glazyl Masculino)
