Baguio students, activists protest poll anomalies

BAGUIO CITY, Philippines — Clad in black or white shirts, 50 college students and activists staged a rally on Friday as part of a national day of protest against alleged anomalies in the May 13 midterm elections.
The protestors gathered at Malcolm Square along downtown Baguio to denounce the alleged widespread cheating in the provinces. They cited the destruction of vote counting machines (VCMs) and memory cards as well as data transmission errors.
They also questioned the defeat of many “progressive” candidates.
In Baguio, humans rights lawyer Jose Molintas lost the mayoral race to retired police general Benjamin Magalong, although Arthur Allad-iw, a member of the activist Cordillera Peoples Alliance, was reelected as Baguio councilor.
The rally included members of the Alliance of Concerned Teachers and the party-list groups Bayan Muna and Kabataan. (Editor: Eden Estopace)
