Slain Tanauan mayor’s daughter wins mayoralty race

SAN PEDRO CITY – The daughter of slain Tanauan City, Batangas mayor Antonio “Thony” Halili won the mayoralty race here against two former mayors and veteran politicians.

Mary Angeline “Sweet” Halili garnered 41,757 votes, way ahead of Sonia Aquino who got 27,381 votes and Alfredo Corona who had 20,132 votes.

Halili of the United Nationalist Alliance was proclaimed Thursday evening.

She entered politics after her father was shot dead in July 2018 during a flag raising ceremony at the city hall grounds.

The incoming mayor’s father was known for publicly shaming petty criminals arrested in Tanauan City.

Prior to his death, Halili  was stripped of police control in 2018 by the National Police Commission due to alleged links to the  illegal drugs trade, which he vehemently denied.  (Editor: Gilbert S. Gaviola)
